CHENGDU · EVERYDAY LIFE
A morning, a chair, a cup of Chengdu
Pull up a chair in a teahouse and discover a city at the scale of a conversation.

Start with somewhere to sit
A teahouse gives a visit to Chengdu a different starting point: a seat. In People's Park, Heming Teahouse is part of a public landscape of trees, water and walking paths. Choose a place, look at the menu and let the first cup arrive before deciding what comes next. The interest is in the arrangement of ordinary things: tables close enough for conversation, a place for a bag, a view beyond the rim of a cup. You can enjoy this small scene without knowing the history of every building around it.
Meet the gaiwan
A gaiwan is a lidded tea bowl, often resting on a saucer. It is a useful object to notice because its parts make the drink visible: the leaves, the bowl, the lid and the water are all close at hand. In a casual teahouse, you may drink from the bowl itself; in another tea setting, a gaiwan may be used to brew tea for smaller cups. Follow the service at your own table and ask for a demonstration if you are curious. There is no need to turn a first cup into a performance.
A tradition that still has a job to do
The most revealing part of a teahouse may be that it remains useful. Tea makes a reason to meet, pause or share a table. Conservation of the Guanyin Hall Teahouse elsewhere in Chengdu was recognised by UNESCO's Asia-Pacific heritage awards in 2023, with attention to keeping its community use as well as its building. That is a helpful way to look at a place like this: architecture matters, and so does what people do in it today. A phone on a wooden table belongs to the present life of the room.
Leave room for an unplanned hour
Give yourself enough time to finish a cup without treating the teahouse as a photograph to collect. Notice one detail you might otherwise miss: the shape of the bowl, the way shade moves across a table, or the different groups sharing the same space. Check the menu for what your order includes; refill arrangements and charges depend on the venue. If you take photographs of people, ask first. A morning here need not prove that an entire city is relaxed. It can simply be one good hour, in one particular corner of Chengdu.
