Make mobile payment work before arrival

Do this in order

  1. Download Alipay from your official app store, register with your overseas number and add a supported international card.

  2. Set up WeChat Pay as a second wallet; a different app and card gives you a useful failure fallback.

  3. After landing, make one small purchase before relying on the wallet for a taxi, train or hotel deposit.

  4. Carry roughly ¥200–500 in cash and keep your physical bank card available for ATMs or larger merchants.
